Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also known as mammoplasty, is a surgery in which excess fat, tissue, and skin are removed from the breast, reducing its size and reshaping it. This procedure is recommended for those who feel that their breasts are too big, cause them back pain, or are unable to play sports with it.

Breast reduction is always performed by a surgeon, who discusses with the patient before surgery what to expect, what the risks are and possible complications.

Surgery is recommended for those who:

  • Suffering from chronic neck, shoulder or back pain and taking painkillers for this
  • Rash and redness under the breasts occur regularly
  • reast size limits movement
  • Feels nerve pain
  • Has a negative self-image because of the size of her breasts
  • Cannot find clothes or a bra

To whom is it not recommended:

  • Who smokes
  • Has diabetes or heart disease or other pre-existing chronic illness
  • Morbidly obese
  • Scars on her breasts bothers her
Breast reduction is not age-related, but anyone who goes through it as a teenager – when their breasts are not yet fully developed – may need another surgery later.

Breast reduction is not recommended if the patient wants to become pregnant in the near future, as the procedure may make breastfeeding more difficult, or if she is about to make a lifestyle change and plans to lose significant weight, as this will significantly reduce breast size.

Risks

As with any major surgery, mammoplasty also has dangers such as bleeding, infection, or the risk of numbness.

Other risks may include:

  • Bruises around the site of surgery, which are later absorbed
  • Scarring
  • Numbness of the nipple
  • Breastfeeding difficulties
  • Breast shape or size asymmetry (this can be corrected later with another surgery)

Before the procedure, the surgeon:

  • Assess the patient’s general health, send it for the necessary examinations (blood, mammography)
  • Warns you not to take aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs before surgery as they may cause bleeding
  • Informs about the risks
  • It explains what you can expect in terms of the outcome of the surgery
  • He examines, measures and photographs the breasts

During surgery

The surgical technique of breast reduction varies from patient to patient, but is most common when a doctor makes an incision around or under the nipple. (Liposuction is also performed in some cases.) It cuts off excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, making the breast the ideal size and shape. It is also possible to reduce the nipple. It may remain in place, but in some cases repositioning is required. The surgeon strives for perfect symmetry, but the two breasts may differ slightly in shape or size, which can later be corrected with another surgery.

Immediately after surgery

  • The patient can spend one night at the clinic or go home if their doctor allows it. It is important that they come by car for it.
  • You will be given painkillers and, against the infection, antibiotics.
  • The breasts are covered with a bandage and excess fluid is removed through two tubes placed under the arms.

In the first days

  • Breasts may be sore, sensitive
  • They are swollen and there may be signs of bruising on the skin
  • Your doctor may recommend a flexible compression bra

In the first weeks

  • The doctor will take out the sutures
  • Sudden movements and strenuous physical activity should be avoided
  • A stiffening bra can only be worn months after surgery

Outcome of the intervention

  • It takes months for the swelling to go down completely and the final size and shape of the breasts to be seen
  • The scars persist but fade significantly over time
  • Eliminates neck, shoulder and back pain due to heavy weight
  • The patient can move and exercise more easily
  • The outcome of the surgery is lasting, but it can be affected by weight loss, weight gain, and aging

Anyone who is disturbed by their big breasts, is ashamed of them, or has pain and discomfort because of them can move more freely after breast reduction and their self-image also improves significantly.
