Permanent hair removal
Unwanted hairs cause a lot of discomfort, but laser treatment can provide a permanent solution so that you don’t have to deal with the inconvenience of hair removal.
A hair removal laser emits a high-energy beam of monochromatic light that is absorbed by the melanin in the hair. When absorbed, the light energy is converted into heat energy, which burns and thus damages the hair follicles. The dead hair follicles no longer grow hairs. As hair follicles are in different stages of growth, over time the hairs that have died off can be replaced by new hairs that grow out of the still intact hair follicles and appear on the treated area. More treatments are therefore needed to achieve a lasting result.
Which body parts does it work on?
The most common areas of the body that are depilated are the legs, underarms, bikini line, arms, back, chin and upper lip, but practically any area can be treated apart from the eyes and tattooed skin.
Who is it most effective on?
The treatment can be performed on all skin types, but is most effective for patients who have fair skin and dark-coloured hair. This is because the laser light must be absorbed by the hair and not the skin pigment, as the hair removal process involves damaging the hair follicles and, through them, the hair follicles, not the skin. For this reason, the treatment is most effective when the contrast is given, i.e. light skin and dark hair. Laser hair removal is less effective for dark skin or blonde, grey and white hairs.
Risks
There is minimal risk of treatment, but skin irritation (redness, mild swelling, in extreme cases blistering) may occur, which will disappear within a few hours after treatment. Laser treatment can make the skin lighter or darker in the treated area, but in most cases this is only temporary and mainly affects people who do not use sun protection before or after treatment.
Preparation
Before treatment, we recommend a personal consultation with a specialist to find out if the patient is suitable and has realistic expectations of laser hair removal. The condition of the skin, its sensitivity and possible scarring disorders should be taken into account.
What to do before treatment
- Avoid sun exposure for at least six weeks before or after laser hair removal and use a minimum of 30 factor cream on areas of the skin not covered by clothing.
- Tanning creams should be avoided.
- Waxing and hair plucking with tweezers should be avoided for at least four weeks before treatment.
- Avoid taking blood-thinning and anti-inflammatory medicines, consult a specialist.
- Shaving the affected area one day before laser hair removal is recommended.
How many treatments are needed?
In most cases, 5-6 treatments are recommended, with the interval between treatments depending on the area treated, on average, treatments are carried out every month.
How is the treatment done?
Special glasses are used to protect the eyes and an anaesthetic cream can be applied to the treated area to minimise discomfort. Where the laser strikes the skin, the patient may feel as if they are being stabbed with a warm needle, but no more serious discomfort. A small area such as the upper lip can be treated in a few minutes, a whole back takes about an hour.
After laser hair removal, the skin may be red and swollen for a few hours, which can be cooled with ice. In case of a more serious reaction, the specialist may treat the sensitive area with a steroid cream. After treatment, sun exposure and sunbeds should be avoided for six weeks and a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 is recommended.
Effects
The hair does not fall out immediately, the process takes a few days or weeks. The hairs that grow out are new hairs, which can be removed with another treatment, as the hair grows in cycles, which is why more treatments are needed. (lasers are most effective on newly growing hairs)
The result is different for each individual and difficult to predict. For some people, the treatment may be a permanent solution in some areas, but in most cases the effect can be long-lasting, lasting for years.
