Blepharoplasty

Sagging eyelids are one of the most common reasons why women and men lie under knives. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a deservedly popular procedure as it involves minimal discomfort and recovery time. The result is instant and extremely spectacular, as the excision of excess skin results in a more open, fresher and thus more youthful look.

As we age, our skin sags (this is called ptosis) and the area under the eyebrows can become heavier on our eyelids, and the bags under the eyes also become more pronounced. This condition negatively affects our appearance because it gives a tired, aged look that is not appealing to everyone. The muscles of the eyes weaken, the skin stretches, and the sacs protrude from under the eyes.

This tendency is often hereditary and therefore typically affects several family members.

In some cases, surgery is performed for functional reasons when the skin is so twitching to the eye that it obstructs the patient’s vision or makes it difficult to wear glasses and contact lenses. There may also be a reason for functional eyelid surgery when the rubbing of elongated skin causes irritation when blinking, or when the muscles in the patient’s forehead already have difficulty lifting the drooping skin.

In aesthetic medicine, we improve the patient’s appearance with the treatment and usually perform the operation on patients over the age of 50 – but at least 35 -. If you are interested in eyelid surgery, you should first consult your doctor, who will inform you about the beneficial – and realistically expected – effects of the surgery. The treatment results in an extremely spectacular positive change that can take up to ten years, but you should also be aware that with us, our skin will continue to age and those who are prone to it will start to have their eyelids sagging again after a while. Therefore, it is sometimes recommended to perform treatments that improve skin firmness and quality, such as Plasmage, thereby reducing the rate of re-sagging.

Before surgery, your doctor will assess possible risk factors such as eye problems caused by diabetes, dry eyes or thyroid. Cigarettes can also be a problem because smokers recover more slowly, so your doctor will usually recommend stopping smoking for a few weeks before the procedure. The surgery is usually outpatient, so it is performed under local anesthesia and the patient can go home immediately after the treatment.

Eyelid surgery can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids, and in some cases both areas are treated at the same time. During the treatment of the upper eyelid, the surgeon excises excess skin and any fat in the bend of the eyelid. The cut takes place in the bend of the eyelid, so there is no visible scar, as in the case of the lower eyelid, because the incision is followed by the incision of the lash line. The surgeon uses the symmetry of the bone structure, facial muscles, and eyebrows to determine how much skin to remove. During the first two days after surgery, it is recommended to ice the reddened, sensitive area from time to time, thus minimizing bruising and swelling. The pain is minimal and can be easily remedied with standard painkillers.

Carefully placed glasses can be worn immediately after the procedure, contact lenses when the swelling has subsided. If the wound has been sutured with an absorbent suture, it is absorbed in a short time, and traditional sutures are usually removed by the surgeon after a week, most of which is completely painless.

The chances of a complication are minimal, possibly with some dry eyes, which can be treated with eye drops and eye massage. People who have undergone eyelid surgery report great satisfaction and a significantly improved self-image, as this procedure often rejuvenates them by up to a decade.
