Tummy Tuck

Tummy tuck improves the appearance of the upper body. This procedure removes fat and excess skin from the abdomen and usually also strengthens the abdominal wall, making the abdomen smooth and tight again.

Sagging abdominal skin can develop for a variety of reasons:

  • Fast, significant weight loss
  • Pregnancy
  • Inherited shape, loose connective tissue
  • or due to aging.
An extremely hanging abdomen is in some cases not only an aesthetic but also a hygienic problem for the patient. If there are pregnancy streaks (stretch marks) below the navel, the patient can get rid of them along with the removed skin. In some cases, the surgeon may also remove the cesarean scar during the procedure.

Tummy tuck may also be necessary after liposuction, which removes excess fat from the abdomen but not excess skin.

Abdominoplasty is not recommended if the patient:

  • Is planning another pregnancy
  • Is preparing for more significant weight loss
  • Have a chronic illness such as e.g. heart or diabetes
  • Body mass index greater than 30
  • Smoking
  • Already had abdominal surgery, which caused a striking (keloid) scarring

Risks of surgery (other than anesthesia and bleeding):

  • Accumulation of fluid under the skin (seroma)
  • Wound inflammation, infection
  • Tissue damage or death (necrosis)
  • Poor wound healing, cutting opening
  • Striking (keloid) scarring
  • Insensitivity of the skin around the scar
During the consultation, the doctor discusses with the patient what his or her expectations are, whether these are realistic, and what he or she can expect from the surgery. He also asks about previous surgeries, allergies, diseases and medications he has taken. The procedure is always performed under anesthesia.

Preparations before and after surgery:

  • The surgeon may send the patient for examinations before surgery.
  • Certain medicines – e.g. taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbs is not recommended before the procedure, but an anticoagulant (anticoagulant) may be prescribed by your doctor.
  • Smoking should be avoided for weeks before and after surgery.
  • After surgery, take the patient home with a friend and spend the first night with him.

The process of abdominoplasty

There are several types of abdominoplasty, the doctor chooses the right one based on the patient’s expectations and abilities. In a general tummy tuck, the surgeon makes a single long, horizontal – or T-shaped – incision and removes subcutaneous fat and excess, elongated skin between the navel and pubic hair. In most cases, it also strengthens the abdominal wall muscle with permanent seams. The navel is placed in a new position to fit perfectly on the already tight abdomen. The long scar from hip to hip will fit into the natural lower wrinkle of the abdomen and will be covered by the underwear. The procedure lasts for two to three hours, during which the patient can receive antibiotics to minimize the chance of infection.

After surgery

The wound is sutured by the doctor, and the drainage tubes — which drain excess fluid and blood out of the wound — are sterile-dressed and an elastic bandage is placed on the patient. Patients must walk from day one to avoid blood clots.
The pain and oedema of the site of surgery is natural in this case, and it is treated in general with analgesics. Drainage tubes are usually removed two days after surgery, at which time the wound is also ligated. You can shower the earliest on the fifth day after surgery, you should not bathe until the sutures are removed and the elastic bandage should be worn continuously for the next 5-6 weeks. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics or anticoagulants for the duration of recovery.
One to two weeks after the procedure, the patient may return to their average daily routine, but sports or other strenuous physical activity should be avoided for at least two months. Care should be taken to prevent the wound from opening with sudden backward or sideways movements.

Tummy tuck is a serious surgery, but we can achieve fantastic results with it. A tight abdomen results in a thinner, more beautiful shape, which, if the patient maintains their weight, restores self-confidence and significantly improves self-image.
