Brachioplasty

Upper arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, shapes an arm and removes excess, drooping skin that is responsible for the “bat wing effect”. As a result of natural aging or after weight loss, the skin between the armpits and elbows may sag to an extent that disturbs the patient. Even after liposuction on the upper arm, the skin can remain loose, in which case we resort to brachioplasty, which is performed by thousands of people every year, with fantastic results.

For whom is upper arm plastic surgery a good solution?

  • Whose weight is ideal but you don’t find your arms tight enough
  • Who has undergone greater weight loss and is disturbed by the remaining excess skin on the upper arm
  • Anyone who confidently wants to wear a sleeveless top, but is aware that the intervention leaves a long scar behind.

The surgeon decides how much excess skin needs to be removed, as this depends on the elasticity of the skin, the size of the excess skin surface, and the amount of fat under the skin. The surgical scar can develop depending on all of this: it is enough to just make an incision in the armpit, but in most cases the scar runs between the armpit and the elbow.

It is important to mention that upper arm plastic surgery only removes excess skin, so if there is a larger amount of fat in the affected area, the surgeon may recommend liposuction first.

Things to do before surgery

  • Abstinence from smoking in the days and weeks before surgery for faster wound healing.
  • Aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs are prohibited because they increase the risk of bleeding.
  • For best results, your doctor may recommend a diet before surgery for further weight loss.

During surgery

The doctor will mark on the arm where he will make the incisions and then, after anesthesia – or local anesthesia – will cut out the excess skin to make the upper arm tighter and more shapely. In all cases, the surgeon tries to minimize the scar, so that the sutures are also placed so that scar formation is kept to a minimum. A sterile pressure bandage is then applied to the arm, which remains on it for a minimum of 72 hours.

What can we expect after surgery?

Upper arm plastic surgery can also be performed under general and local anesthesia. In the latter case, the patient can go home immediately after surgery, but in this case, someone must be asked to take them home by car and be with them for the next 24 hours. It is advisable to make more pillows for the bed because raising the arm will result in more comfortable rest and also reduce swelling. In the 48 hours after surgery, we may experience mild pain, discomfort, and swelling of the arm, but these discomfort subside after two days.

For the next few days, make an outfit that has a button or zipper in front of it and you don’t have to hide it over your head, or the lover is luckier instead of lace-up shoes. If we do physical work, one or two weeks off should be taken and lifting heavy objects is also prohibited.

You can already play sports in the sixth week after the operation, and the area of the cuts will start to fade and smooth into the surface of the skin at least a year later.
