Permanent hair removal
Unwanted hair can cause a lot of discomfort, but laser treatment can provide a permanent solution, eliminating the inconvenience of hair removal.
The hair removal laser emits a high-energy, monochromatic light beam that is absorbed by the melanin in the hair. During absorption, the light energy is converted into heat energy, which burns and thus damages the hair follicles. As a result, no more hair grows from the dead hair follicles. Since hair is in different growth phases, new hair may grow from the still intact hair follicles over time, appearing in the treated area. Therefore, multiple treatments are necessary to achieve lasting results.
Which body parts does it work on?
The most commonly treated areas for hair removal are the legs, underarms, bikini line, arms, back, chin, and upper lip. However, the treatment can be performed on virtually any area except the eyes and tattooed skin.
Who is it most effective for?
The treatment can be performed on all skin types, but it is most effective for patients with light skin and dark hair. This is because the laser light needs to be absorbed by the hair pigment, not the skin pigment, to damage the hair and hair follicles effectively. Therefore, the treatment is most effective when there is a contrast, meaning light skin and dark hair. The effectiveness of laser hair removal is lower for dark skin and blonde, gray, or white hair.
Risks
The treatment has minimal risks, but skin irritation (redness, mild swelling, in extreme cases blistering) may occur, which subsides a few hours after the treatment. Laser treatment can lighten or darken the skin in the treated area, but in most cases, this is only temporary and mainly affects those who do not follow sun protection guidelines before or after the treatment.
Preparation
A personal consultation with a specialist is recommended before the treatment to determine if the patient is suitable and has realistic expectations regarding laser hair removal. The condition and sensitivity of the patient’s skin, as well as any scarring disorders, should be considered.
Pre-treatment tasks
- Avoid sun exposure for at least six weeks before and after laser hair removal, and use a minimum SPF 30 sunscreen on exposed skin.
- Avoid using tanning creams.
- Do not wax or pluck hair with tweezers for at least four weeks before the treatment.
- Avoid taking blood-thinning and anti-inflammatory medications; consult the specialist about these.
- It is recommended to shave the affected area one day before the laser hair removal.
How many treatments are needed?
In most cases, 5-6 treatments are recommended, with the interval between treatments depending on the treated area, typically performed monthly.
How is the treatment performed?
Special goggles protect the eyes, and the specialist may apply an anesthetic cream to the treated skin area to minimize discomfort. Where the laser hits the skin, the patient may feel a warm pinprick sensation, but it is not more uncomfortable than that. Treating a small area like the upper lip takes a few minutes, while a full back takes about an hour.
After laser hair removal, the skin may be red and swollen for a few hours, which can be cooled with ice. In case of a more severe reaction, the specialist may treat the sensitive area with a steroid cream. Sunbathing and tanning beds should be avoided for six weeks after the treatment, and a minimum SPF 30 sunscreen is recommended.
Effect
The hair does not fall out immediately; this process takes a few days or weeks. The growing hairs are new ones, which can be removed with additional treatments, as hair grows in cycles, making multiple treatments necessary. (The laser is most effective on newly grown hairs.)
The result varies from person to person and is difficult to predict in advance. For some, the treatment may provide a permanent solution in certain areas, while for most, the effect is long-lasting and can last for years.
